Annual General Meeting with music and potluck By Don Larson

The Annual General Meeting of the NGL&S and Barneleikarring will be called to order at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday September 15th at Anne Huberman and Greg Goodhue?s home. Please plan to attend and please do the following in preparation for the meeting: Prepare your membership dues check to hand to Mette Helestad, our treasurer, prior to the start of the meeting. Dues for active full adult members are $20. Dues for affiliate, provisional, and barneleikarring members are $5. Those who cannot be in attendance at the meeting will need to mail your dues checks to Mette at 2350 Tasso St. Palo Alto, CA 94301 and may also wish to send a set of proxy voting instructions (for instance ?vote with the recommendations of the nominating committee for board members and with the recommendations of the membership committee for membership changes.? ) Although we have no printed policy for absentee proxies, this issue will likely be formalized in our policy document this year.

Anne and Greg live at 751 Salt Lake Drive, San Jose, CA. Driving directions: Take 101 or 680 to McKee Road. Exit to the east (towards the foothills) and proceed to Capitol Avenue (just east of 680). Turn left (north) on Capitol Avenue and continue to Mabury Road, about ¾ mile. Turn right on Mabury Road and continue about 4 tenths of a mile to Salt Lake Drive. You come to Salt Lake Drive just after the bus stop located on the right hand side of Mabury (It is the first intersection after the road straightens out.) Turn left on Salt Lake Drive. Go past the first intersection (Glen Heather Drive, on the left) they are the third house on the left from there, just before you reach Reece Way. If you have questions, Greg and Anne can be reached at (408) 259-9959.

Anne and Greg have offered to host a potluck following the meeting and request we bring potluck dishes. The Spelemannslag will be rehearsing their Turlock performance material at 4:30 P.M. for your listening pleasure.

Artistic Co-Director's Report Submitted by Mikkel Thompson

Well I guess this will probably be the last time that I will write an article in the PolSnus as an Artistic Director. I hope as many as possible come and share their ideas as to the direction the NGL&S will move in the coming year. Although I plan to stay involved, it will not be at the level of time commitment that I have given for the last 17 years. Thank you for allowing me to grow in my awareness and develop the deep love for Norwegian dance and music. Meeting most Wednesday nights and some Sundays, giving the extra time for performances, sharing the laughter and tears on trips has allowed to develop that wonderful sense of 'family' that I share with you and treasure.

I look forward to seeing most of you at the AGM. Please bring a list of all the borrowed items from NGL/NGS/NGB/Mikkel to be listed by the property organizer. Viking costumes, solje, bunads, costumes, shoes, scarves, jackets, hats, shoes, sound equipment. Would you bring and return borrowed videos, books, tapes, etc. or let me know what you have.

A year full of activities! An annual favorite, Scandi-fest in Turlock, the big concert in Reno with all three groups participating, VikingFest at Ibsen Park, Camp Norge Folkedans Stevne at Alta with Gunnulf Sletta (who just got married on Aug. 3 at the Heddal Stave Kirke in Telemark), Jul/Christmas celebrations, FamilieDans weekend at Alta in Jan. with the NGB with Ginny Lee and Mark Ward teaching and Ginny and Elizabeth Hansen organizing, auditions for the SFEDF, Installations, Anniversaries, Sytendemai celebrations, Norway Day for all three groups, Ferndale MidsummerFest for then, Estes Park, CO, weddings (congratulations Lars-Erik and Damaris), and so many other events.

Zena and I were invited to perform Parhalling fra Dalsfjord at the music week festival in Aal, Hallingdal. The theme of the week was American Fever/Norwegian Tradition. Several people from the NGL (Tom, Bryan, Sharon) and Scandia Dancers (LA) performed an American dance suite and a Norwegian bygdedans suite. Henry and Jeanne were there also with their clogging skills. With 10 performances over four days, we had to schedule slots of time to enjoy the rest of the festival.

This coming year offers many more opportunities. In Turlock we perform all three days, with Lancier and other dances (like Norway Day) on Sat. and Sun. and parade Sat. morning within the fairgrounds (not downtown this year) for all three groups to participate in. We will rehearse all Wed. in Sept. for this event. After Scandi-Fest, think about CNFS at Alta on Nov. 1 - 3, auditioning for the SFEDF, and FamilieDans weekend in Jan. and Norway Day in May. We, the NGL, NGS & NGB have been invited participate in and perform at the AmeriKappleik 2003, July 23 - 27 at St. Olaf College in Northfield MN. This is the event that was planned for this Aug. 2002 but was postponed because of Sept. 11. Many of the expected 1-200 Norwegian fiddlers and dancers could not make a commitment to attend. Now it is happening and is expected to be the biggest gathering of Norwegian and Norwegian-American fiddlers and dancers in North America. There will be concerts every evening, classes, lectures and performances and maybe extra activities for the kids during the day (they would like to have a concert focusing on youth and tradition). I would like to see this as a 8 to 14 day trip/tour. We have been invited to perform and be hosted by the S of N at Salt Lake City UT, both lodges in Denver CO and Cedar Rapids SD. It could be 6-7 days to get there, 4-5 for the AmeriKappleik, and 3 to return (or 1 to fly!). Or a shorter trip with flying or driving and not sightseeing. If we start planning now we can apply for grants, work on fund raisers, etc..

Something to think about and discuss at the AGM! Ha det godt. Helsing, Mikkel

"HUGGING" Found and submitted by Crystal Lokken

Hugging is healthy. It helps the body's immune system, it keeps us healthier, it cures depression, it reduces stress, it induces sleep, it's invigorating, it's rejuvenating and it has no unpleasant side effects!

Hugging is virtually a miracle food: it is organic, naturally sweet, contains no pesticides, no preservatives, no artificial ingredients, and is 100 percent wholesome.

Hugging is practically perfect. There are no moving parts to wear out, no batteries to replace, no periodic checkups, requires low energy consumption with high energy yield. It is inflation-proof, non-fattening and
requires no monthly payments.

It also requires no fulfilling of life insurance requirements and is theft-proof, non-taxable (at least so far), non-polluting, and of course, fully returnable.

It is also universally applicable: You can hug your mate, your friends, your children and grandchildren, your pets and even trees. Go for it!
